So what is 'IT'?

Most of my hair pictures seem to be taken with the blackberry, which is kinda crappy... I need to get better with breaking out the big dog cannon. Most of the time either I or my hands are wet and its easier to just grab the phone. Anyway the reason of this post is to show what my freshly washed still wet hair looks like.
I really don't know what to classify my hair according to those typing systems. There is very little curl, maybe a couple of 3c curls in the very front, then the majority of hair is "z's" or bends with pen spring coils on the ends. So what is that? It really doesn't matter to me what it is though, its all about 'what it do'. What does it prefer and how will it react to x y & z. At first I got sucked into the trap of buying stuff that was not for my hair but for someone elses hair type that I was admiring, which I think is curl envy. Curl envy will leave you broke and unsatisfied!

First commandment love thy own curls or lack there of! :)

There is no conditioner that is going to give me 3b's, I don't even think I can do a wash and go cause how do you define a "z"?
So keep in mind that the views and opinions expressed by me are base on this stuff right here! If your hair does similar things then you might like what I like, if not keep looking for your hair twin and don't go trying to fix something that's not broken to make your hair look like something it wasn't meant to be.

Girl don't eeeven get caught up n the "hair typin" game, it is just another subliminal discriminaition tool, your hair is Beautiful in it's own skin the way it isss!

Your hair is gorgeous! Type? Who cares! We all have unique hair and health is all that matters.

I never got down with hair typing. I think my hair was all z bends any except for tight coils at the nape of my neck. The only thing that ever worked for me was using an entire bottle of mousse right out the shower and then a blowdryer to get rid of all the dripping water. But, a whole bottle? Never worth it in my opininon! How long does it take you to detangle? Just thinking about that makes my skin crawl. I think I'm about to go sell my Denman to ensure no turning back with my locs!

Girl YES!! I so agree with your stance on hair typing. At first I was always saying that my hair is a cross between a 4a and 4b. But you really can't put my hair in a category other than nappy, LOL.

I see we are hair texture sisters! Hey!

I also forgot to say, I never understood the hair typing...as long as I have healthy hair, whether it is a, b, c or z who cares?

I find the hair typing system very useful as it cuts down on the work involved in trying to find my hair twin. I can find her very easily by just looking at her listed hairtype...and THEN see if her hair is in fact similar to mine. It has also helped me save TREMENDOUSLY on hair products. And lastly, it has helped me in learning from other women with a similar hairtype (to mine) how to style my hair and maintain it.

The key, I believe, is to realize that many of us are multi-textured and/or uniquely textured. Each person is different and what works for one may or may not work for the other. Hair texture identification is ONLY meant to serve as a guideline or starting point. It's not meant to "discriminate" (that's such BS, I can't take it) nor is it meant to be some sort of nappy bible. It's simply meant to be a launching pad/starting point in finding others who use effective products/styling methods that may help similarly textured people.

THAT'S IT.

(Also, if hair texture identification systems were meant to "discriminate", then what do we think about hair products, systems for afro-textured hair? Is that to discriminate as well? One could argue that "we are the world" and we should just ignore any advice or products offered for afro-textured hair...and simply use products that are recommended for Caucasian women. Give me a break.

It's meant to EMPOWER and cut down on research time. NOT to discriminate (that obviously annoys me when people say things like that, lol). Sigh.

I was wondering more if you find that since your hair has been trained for so many years in locs, does your hair naturally part like that still? Like if you had wanted to start locs over would you be able to very closely replicate the same parts?

Amen!!! Let em know!!!

I think, many of us, fall into the "curl envy" stage and become crazed product junkies when we initially go natural or atleast it was that way for me. When you're permed you look at another permed head and can usually use the same product to produce the same result..you know? Just takes some trial and error...

I have a friend who constantly watches natural hair vlogs with pen and pad, noting all the products they recommend. Cause in her mind she will have the same results as the vlogger...regardless of the persons hair type...sigh...

Your hair is beautiful. I can't believe you took it down, but I must say that I like it on you either way. Sometimes we just need a new leg of the journey, a change. I know you like makeup, so check my blog if you are interested in two giveaways (one with Sephora products and the other with Max Factor products).

i luv it.. i took my locs down 9 months ago.... Ive been trimming pretty consistantly since then... I loved ur locks , but I can tell the loose naps are fresh as well.
it took me a total of 3 weeks since I work mon- fri & still had to go to work during the process. I went through about 6 or 7 bottles of cheapy suave & 2 boxes of wig pins... re: hairtyping, I dont dig it either;I think it further embeds this hierarchical BS that we get caught up in as blk ppl ( skin , color, hair texture etc)... as far as the hair twin thing its cool to see someone with your similar texture for those who it would matter to, but in reality just because a hair twin ( or anyone else with hair that appears to be similar) uses a certain product does not mean ur hair will react the same way... there are waaay too many other important facts like porosity, your climate, if ur hair needs or doesnt need protien, whats the actual condtion of ur hair.. etc)

z's can still wash and go. I have a great friend that has no curls anywhere and her zigzaging shake and go is the fiercest on the planet.

Your hair is beautiful, but real time talk, I really have been in a haze for the past several months-I didn't even realized you had taken your locs down. Beautiful hair!
